Hickory Wind

The Project

The three-story glazed stair tower provides the focus of a landscaped inner courtyard with the third level providing a meditation space and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The clients’ love of Japanese and American prairie-style architecture informed the design of this house. The three-story glazed stair tower provides the focus of a landscaped inner courtyard with the third level providing a meditation space and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In plan, the building takes the shape of a chevron, which allows an integration with the subtle forms of the topography and opens the house to the expansive views, while screening the undesirable.
