Historic Addition

The Project

The addition was added to the house by means of a hyphen to minimize its visual impact and to remain subordinate to the historic main structure.

The owners of this home in the Historic District of Warrenton, Virginia requested a first floor addition to include a master bedroom, bath, closet, and laundry space.

The addition was added to the house by means of a hyphen to minimize its visual impact and to remain subordinate to the historic main structure. Other architectural strategies include: breaking down the mass of the addition into smaller elements, keeping the addition lower and positioned behind the main house, and use of similar roof pitches and materials to compliment and respect the original historic structure.

The style of the addition does not replicate the original house but sympathetically respects its design elements.
